Facts
Something for every Cavan person to think about…
Q. Do you think the proposed Tesco Extra will enhance the local community?
A. It won’t!
Closure of local businesses on the Main Street means less business rates to the County Council.
This means less money for local services such as:
- Childcare support services
- Homecare support for the elderly
- Litter collection
- Road sweeping and maintenance
- Street Lighting
- Leisure facilities
- Library services etc
Closed and boarded up businesses means more anti-social behaviour.
When local businesses close, who will support your local GAA team, sponsor your local festival or help with charity fundraisers?
This isn’t just about local businesses – this is about YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.
How do you want it to look in 2 or 3 year’s time?

Q. Do you think the proposed Tesco Extra will give you lower prices, more choice and create jobs?
A. It won’t!
For every 20 jobs created at Tesco 30 will be lost in the local economy.
Tesco is likely to replace the jobs it has created with computerised tills over time.
The prices in the new store won’t be any different to the existing store.
You will have less choice. The opening of the Tesco Extra will destroy Cavan town’s Main Street.

Tesco is not a charity – It is investing 10 million euro in acquiring and developing the site. You could pay with the loss of your job and your community.
